THE BIGGEST JUST GOT BIGGER! April 2008

In November 2006 Miller announced it had produced one of the world's largest excavator buckets. The EX 5500 bucket was manufactured for Hitachi Construction Machinery Europe and with a capacity of 29 m³ was the biggest bucket in the company's history. That is until now...

The image below shows the gigantic PC 4000 bucket, recently manufactured by Miller at its new Nelson Park facility in Cramlington, Northumberland. This is a bulk handling bucket and has been manufactured for Komatsu USA, the end user will be operating the bucket in a coal mine in Canada. This ground breaking bucket weighs a massive 31 tonnes, measures 4.3m wide x 3.95m tall x 4.05m deep and has a capacity of 31.34m³ (2.34m³ more than the EX 5500).

Gavin Townsend, Operations Director, said

’This is another great achievement for the company and we want this kind of order to continue. We are using the physical benefits of the Nelson Park facility to allow us to manufacture buckets of this scale. Complementing our own internal skills and experiences with advice from a number of external experts we have used the most advanced manufacturing practices to ensure this bucket will be strong enough and durable enough to work in the hostile environment it is intended for.’
